Chapter Fifteen
Indiana
The moment I’m outside his room, I’m running. My only thought on getting the hell away from here. I don’t want to go back to my room or college at all.
Once I’m outside the building, I let my wings free and take off into the air. I fly with no destination in sight. Never before have I given myself the freedom to fly like this. Everything was done with purpose. From learning how to use my wings to practicing maneuvers. But this time is just to get away.
Tears cascade down my cheeks as I burst through the storm clouds. I’m soaking wet from the rain but above caring. I was a fool to think there could be something between Luc and me. From what whomever that was in Luc’s room said, this was all a ruse. Luc wants me to fall. He wants me to become something I have no desire to be. And for half a second when we were wrapped in each other, I wondered what it would be like to be his all the time. To push Paris out of the way and claim Lucien like I wanted him.
But the cold, hard reality of our connection brought me back down and made me aware that he never felt anything for me, even if I thought he did. Master manipulator, Lucien Anara, got me good. And now I’m left with nowhere to go and no one to talk to. I certainly can’t face Bastian. He warned me—told me Luc was toying with me—and I disputed it. Yet, here I am. Crying above the clouds.
I fly until my wings tire and all the energy drains from my body. Night is falling but there’s still some light. I’m able to come down from the clouds with little risk of being seen. I have no idea where I am. The mountain range below is inviting, so I drop down to one of its peaks and look for a place I can hole up in for a bit. There’s an outcropping of rock not far below me.
With a quick swoop, I fly down and land in the open mouth of a small cavern. It’s dark inside and I don’t hear any noises but that doesn’t mean this isn’t the den of a wild animal.
With quiet steps, I move inside until I’m near the back. Letting out a breath of air, I’m relieved that I’m alone. Thank fuck I wasn’t just mauled by some animal.
The ground is cold when I sit down. Luckily, my clothes and hair dried during my flight.
What a fool I was. I gave myself over to Luc. Was ready to say fuck it all and give us a real shot at something. Now I’ll be the laughing stock of the school. Poor, naïve Indy let the Devil’s grandson play her like a violin. Lovely. The entire student body has something new to talk about. I’m sure the rumors will spread fast. It doesn’t help my case that no less than a dozen students saw me rush from Andras Campus with my clothes on crooked.
